Weekend News, Class conversation, Meeting for Worship and More

 Monday

 Welcome

 To The First Edition

Of Our Weekend News

What is weekend news? It's dictation given by each Cardinal weekly on Mondays after returning to school from the weekend. It's another way for young children to strengthen language skills, develop longer sentence structure, gain skills in recalling and retelling information, understand sequence of events and to further develop memory skills.

As the weeks and months go by you will see your Cardinal gaining skills in all of the above areas. Some weeks you will notice that your Cardinal had a lot to say while other weeks not so much or the information given may be from your Cardinal's imagination or may repeat the same information as before. This is all okay. The purpose of the weekend news is to help foster language development and over time children develop and maintain these skills with practice!

Art class - Johanna started class by asking the Cardinals, "Who has big muscle?" Followed by "Why do we need strong fingers" Johanna told friends today our focus will be on building our hand muscles. She said we are going to the gym, "The art gym", this made our Cardinals giggle! Johanna continue to tell friends we will be working on cutting with scissors, ripping paper, rolling, folding and pressing with our hands and fingers. Johanna explained the work will help us have super strong finger muscles to do lots of amazing things like drawing, writing and holding things! The materials used were hold punchers, scissors, tape, foil paper, glue, paper and markers. Our Cardinals were very focused as they busy themselves with creating their work while building their finger muscles!! Ask your Cardinals how can you build finger muscles?

Tuesday

Alicia gave the Cardinals a fun challenge today! Friends worked in pairs of twos. One friend put on a pair of sunglasses. The other friend picked a color without letting their partner see it and placed it on the person's head with the glasses. The friend with the glasses then tried to guess what color it was by saying the color in Spanish. The friend without the glasses gave clues as to what the color was! Once a friend guessed right they switched roles. Great team work Cardinals. Today it was Aya's turn to squeeze la vaca!

Today we had a conversation with our Cardinals about "What do you want to learn more about?" Here is what friends had to say:

Simone - Lion - how they run fast, (Lion King - how to sing all the songs)

Wednesday

The Cardinals have been practicing being silent during our class morning meeting. We can now be silent up to 5-8 minutes! Yay Cardinals! The Cardinals will join Kindergarten through fourth grade in the meetinghouse the week before Thanksgiving. Soon, we will start practicing our meeting for worship in the music room as another space outside our classroom. Today, we told the Cardinals how we were going to spend our meeting for worship time in our classroom. We explained the activity we were going to do, which entailed two friends at a time getting two wooden blocks each and placing them anywhere they chose on the large piece of black paper. Before we began we told the class two important rules to follow, "You can not move anyone's blocks and we need to do our activity in silence." Wow, our Cardinals did a fantastic job!!

After breaking our silence, we asked each Cardinal, "What do you think our creation looks like? Here is what friends had to say:

Finley - Philadelphia, where I use to live.

Lake - New York city, my Mema lives there.

Aya - A place for Ballerina Princess

Simone - A moose

Elliott - My house

Renata - I think New Jersey

Lila - A airplane landing at Paris.

Colby - I zoo cause I like animals.

Logan  - Water where Mermaids live.

Ashanti read us the books, Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry and Negative Cat by Sophie Blackall. The first book was about loving your hair color, feel, style, short, long etc. Ashanti asked at the end of the book who love their hair. All our Cardinals hands went up. She then said touch your hair and give it some hair love! The next book was about a little boy who got a cat as a pet. The cat was named Max and the cat did a lot of bad things. Until one day the boy started reading a book and Max liked the book. Max crawled into the boy's lap and purred. From that day on Max was a nice cat and the boy read to Max all the time! Ask your Cardinal what did you think of these two books?

Finley led us into music class and we danced to the song Give Love by Mc Yogi. The Cardinals warmed up their singing voices with hooty the Owl. Friends then sang our hello song Jambo as Keisha played her guitar. Followed by singing and doing the movements for There's A Cobble Down the Street. Keisha gave out bells and friends sang and did the actions for Bell Horse such as tipped toe away, jump away, gallop away, march away, fly away and hop on one foot away. Keisha finished up class by playing her guitar and singing, See The Pony Galloping Down the Country Lane. Friends listened to directions and followed the multi step direction! Nice work Cardinals!! Ask your Cardinal which song they liked most in music class?

Thursday

The Cardinals worked on fine motor skills today. Friends ripped paper, cut paper with scissors, worked with play-dough and drawing. Friends also made many creative creations!!

Masai's back, our Cardinal classroom family is complete!! Friends were very excited to see Masai and they gave hugs even before she could take her jacket off!!

Today our gym class was outside and focused on running while kicking a ball and throwing a ball up and catching it with two hands. Josh and Tiffany demonstrated how high to throw but also gave friends a challenge to see how high they can throw and still catch the ball as it comes down. The Cardinals also worked on following 1, 2 and 3 step directions and practiced their galloping, running in place and skipping skills! Ask your Cardinal how it felt having gym class outside? and Why?

We are looking forward to having conversations and seeing you all tomorrow at Conference !!
