Art class began with Johanna telling friends they were going to shop for the art supplies they want to work with. The Cardinals were very excited about this activity. Johanna then had friends four at a time with black trays and began their shopping. The Cardinals had the choice to go back and shop if they needed more supplies. Friends choose materials such as foil paper, pipe cleaners, markers, scissors, hole punchers, yarn, glue, stickers, stencils, small colorful paper, and tape to create their masterpieces on white paper!  Ask your Cardinal what did you like about this activity?

Friends rotating through three stations of fine motor skills - creating individual snowflakes, cutting paper with scissors and working with duplos.

Tuesday

Early this morning we cleaned Betta's tank. While this process was happening friends had much to say such as, "Now, Betta have cleaner home to live in. This little cup too small for Betta. His nose touching the side. He big at bottom but I look in he small. He has green and red colors. I think he so loney all by himself. But we here with him. When we go home he all alone. But we come back to school. He looking at us", friends started giggling. This conversation and observations were so deep and all led by our amazing smart Cardinals. As friends took a look outside of themselves to see and figure out how Betta might be fearing with the life of a fish!!

Alicia began by having the Cardinals individually count in Spanish from uno to trece (1-13) as they walked in the room. Only a few friends needed a little help with the beginning part of the numbers. Our Cardinals did an awesome job! Yay Cardinals!! Today Alicia read us the book Mary wears what she wants. The book is based on the true story of Mary Edwards Walker who was not allowed to wear pants during a time long, long ago. The Cardinals had much to say as they did not think, "It was fair, Not nice, Not kind, or Spectful (respectful)." Alicia then taught us two words that described pieces of clothing, pants- (pantalones) and dress (vestido). Stay tuned for more!!  Today it was Grant's turn to squeeze La Vaca! Ask your Cardinal what they thought of this book?

After our snack time, the Cardinals began to work on creating a different type of snowflakes. Friends used white coffee filter paper, water colors and pipettes. The activity focuses on fine motor, eye-hand coordination and self-patient skills. Stay tuned for next steps!

Wednesday

The Cardinals did not go over to the meeting house with the rest of lower school today. However, we did have meeting for worship with a silence activity this morning. We did this activity before and so most Cardinals remember the rules. We explained the activity and rules which entailed two friends at a time getting two wooden blocks and placing them anywhere they chose on the large piece of black paper. The two important rules to follow were, "You can not move anyone's blocks and we need to do our activity in silence." Wow, our incredible Cardinals did a fantastic job!! Ask your Cardinal to tell you about this activity?

This activity lasts about 20 minutes!! We then asked each Cardinal as they looked at our creation, "What did you help to create." Here is what friends had to say:

Colby - New York City

Lila - A big fountain

Evie - Museum

Masai - My baby sister's school cause it has those two triangles.

Nat - House

Renata - A mountain

Simone - Park

Elliott - Philadelphia

Lake - A school

Logan - Water Park

Grant - City

Finley - Australia

Ashanti read us the books Where Bear? by Sophy Henn and Little blue and Little yellow by Leo, Lionni in Library class. Friends were very excited to choose and check out their own book to bring back to our classroom!

Masai led us into music class and we danced with scarves and shaker eggs to Firely by Jazzy Ash. After singing our hello song Jambo, Keisha taught/recapped a chat.

     Five Cows

This little cow eats grass (yummy yummy)

This little cow eats hay (yummy yummy)

This little cow drinks water (slurp)

This little cow ran away (run fingers up arm)

This little cow does nothing

but lays around all day (rub thumb)

so we chase him around all day (tickle whole body).

Keisha then read us some of the book Owl Moon by Jane Yolen. Followed by Keisha teaching us some movements that go along with this book. We also sang and did the movements to the song All around the kitchen. Each Cardinal then got two shaker eggs, did movement and sang along as Keisha played her guitar to the song Shiver. We all finished up class by singing our goodbye song!! Ask your Cardinal what did you do in music class?

Thursday

The Cardinals continued their work of making snowflakes  this morning!! Friends used scissors to create their individual flakes. Come take a look!

The Cardinals focus on introduction to games strategies today in gym class. As friends worked on the game tag. We started with skipping/running around the perimeter of the gym. Then Josh gave the rules and instructions and friends were eager to start playing. Wow, the many squeals and actions of joy were wonderful to hear and see!!

Friday

Early this morning we had an assembly in the auditorium. Back in the classroom, we had morning meeting followed by snack time. Soon the entire AFS community took part in a service project. The Cardinals, Catbirds and Hummingbirds classes along with their second grade buddies helped to do service work by baking cookies which will be decorated on Martin Luther King Day here at AFS on Monday 1/19/26. These cookies will be given to people in shelters to hopefully bring a smile to their face and for them to feel a sense that others care about them. Ask your Cardinal why we did not eat any of the cookies?

We hope to see you, your family and friends this coming Monday, 1/19/26 at AFS for Martin Luther King day of service work!

Later in the morning the Cardinals had community time with our second grade buddies!!

                  Have a warm/safe weekend!!
