Monday
In art class with Johanna, she introduced the word collage and two books by Eric Carle, The Tiny Seed and The Grouchy Ladybug. Johanna asked friends what they notice on pages. She also asked how do you think Eric Carle made these pictures? Friends had many ideas. Johanna then told the Cardinals that Eric Carle didn't use markers or drew the pictures but in fact he would paint paper and then cut out shapes to design his books. Soon, the Cardinals were off to make collages inspired by Eric Carle. Friends used big pieces of brown paper to create their collages, along with small colorful paper, scissors, glue and hole punches with shapes. Ask your Cardinal to tell you what they're creating in the pictures below?
We had a conversation with our Cardinals about apples and applesauce. As we noticed friends at snack and lunch time were eating them. At the bottom of each applesauce pouches are questions and answers. Friends like hearing them and are becoming good at listening and answering/guessing the answers. During our making applesauce conversation, we asked each Cardinal, "How many apples do you think we will need and what color apples? Here is what friends had to say:
Lake - 5 green
Elliott - 4 red
Evie - 6 green
Grant - 9 green
Finley - 5 red
Renata - 17 green
Simone - 10 green
Masai - green
Logan - 10 green
Colby - 10 red
Aya - 8 red
Lila - 12 green We will make our applesauce next week?
Large motor exploration and investigation!
Tuesday
The Cardinals worked on fine motor skills today. We used different size and color paper to cut with kid scissors. We talked about and showed friends where the scissors are kept and how to safely hold scissors as they walked to the table. We showed and helped some friends begin to learn how to hold a scissor, how to open and close a scissor with one hand. Some friends also worked on holding paper and cutting at the same time. We also practice writing our name which we do each morning and work with play dough with our fingers as our tools! Great work Cardinals!! This work is one way that helps build finger strength and eye-hand coordination. These skills are very important for writing now and years to come! We will continue this work daily!
Spanish class, Alicia continued the work of counting with friends. She read the book Numeros by Scholastic, which was a book about cute animals. Followed by the Cardinals working with Unifix cubes to help with learning numbers. Alicia placed cubes in front of friends, then she called out numbers 1-5 in Spanish. Friends listen carefully and put out that number of cubes. Friends needed a little help or did most of this work independently. Great job Cardinals!! We finished up class by Alicia calling out numbers and friends making that amount of footsteps around the classroom. Today it was Finley's turn to squeeze la vaca!
The Cardinals enjoying a picnic lunch outside on this beautiful day!!
Wednesday
Library class, Ashanti read us two books, This Story is Not About A Kitten by Randall de Seve and Dragan by Wayne Anderson. Ask your Cardinal which book they liked best? Soon it was time to choose a book to bring back to our classroom!
Music class
Our Cardinals listened to Leap Frog by Jazzy Ash as they made movements and warmed up. Keisha then played her guitar and sang along with friends as they sang Jambo. Followed by Keisha introducing us to her last friend Bruce - loud voice. We already met Peter Rabbit - speaking voice, Betty the Butterfly - whispering voice and Hooty the Owl - singing voice. Friends also worked on using all these different tones of voices! Nice job, amazing Cardinals! Ask your Cardinal to show you one or three of the different tone of voice above?
The Cardinals then sang with Keisha while making movements to Sing Together such as clapping hands, rolling arms, wiggling around, marching in place, tiptoeing, jumping in place and clapping hands together. As Keisha played the drum, friends needed to pay close attention to the beats and followed the beat instructions such as slow - walk slow, fast - run, small taps - tip-toe and loud - jump. We finished up class with our goodbye song!
The Cardinals drawing with chalk outside of Andrea and Tonya's office! Fine motor skills and work is in everything we do!
Thursday
No School
Friday
The Cardinals continued their work on developing their fine motor skills by making bracelets with pipe cleaners and beads. This was tricky for some Cardinals but we know that with practice. Friends will master this skill.
As we finished up our morning meeting, a big spider came over to the rug. The Cardinals were not scared but curious . They gathered around as the spider stopped moving. We got to count its legs (without touching it). Friends learned that this spider had 8 legs. The spider then ran under a bookshelf. We let it be but friends had many questions/comments as to where it was going. What a great teachable moment to see a spider up close and to discover how many legs it had!!
Spanish class
The Cardinals went over the numbers on the Calendar and Hundred Chart in Spanish with Alicia. Followed by playing the swatter game in which each friend got a chance to practice figuring out numbers as Alicia called them out in Spanish!! This work of consistent repetition is essential in young children's learning! Alicia introduced a big dice and each friend got to roll it. The number it landed on that friend picked an action for all the Cardinal to do! Today it was Logan's turn to squeeze la vaca!
